Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and printed by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where in fact the player must acquire resources to make the global world and keep maintaining health, a creative method where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the ability to fly, an excitement method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Laptop or computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and property for the game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and gained numerous honors and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game up to now and the second best-selling gaming of all right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

The overall game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move freely across the world, objects can only be placed at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials blocks and place them somewhere else, enabling various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the gamer is put on the surface of the procedurally produced and virtually infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system practices a night and day routine, with one full circuit lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players come across various non-player people known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
