Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to play in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around inserting and breaking blocks. The overall game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only be positioned at set locations on the grid. The entire world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system practices a night and day cycle, with one full circuit sustained 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players face various non-player individuals known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
