Minecraft is a sandbox gaming originally created by Swedish game custom made Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and printed by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft enable players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, source of information gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the global world and keep maintaining health, a creative method where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the capability to fly, an excitement mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics upon release, and received numerous prizes and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game to date and the second best-selling video game ever, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of independence in choosing how to experiment with the gameHowever, there is an achievements system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experience in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around positioning and breaking blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move readily around the world, objects can only be put at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these material blocks and place them somewhere else, thus enabling various constructions. At the start of the game, the gamer is located on the top of any procedurally produced and practically infinite game world. The earth is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system uses a complete day and night pattern, with one full cycle lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players come across various non-player personas known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been noted by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
