Minecraft is a sandbox gaming formerly created by Swedish game developer Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and posted by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay settings are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the ability to fly, an excitement setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or kill any. The Personal computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and possessions for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and won numerous honors and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, rendering it the best-selling PC game currently and the second best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of flexibility in choosing how to experiment with the gameHowever, there is an achievements system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experience in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move openly around the world, objects can only just be positioned at preset locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials blocks and place them anywhere else, thus enabling various constructions. In the very beginning of the game, the participant is positioned on the top of an procedurally generated and practically infinite game world. The global world is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system follows a night and day pattern, with one full pattern prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players face various non-player personas known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
