Minecraft is a sandbox video game formerly created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and printed by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft allow players to generate constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the world and keep maintaining health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the capability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Laptop or computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and belongings for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics after release, and gained numerous honors and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game up to now and the second best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a offer to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players plenty of freedom in choosing how to try out the gameHowever, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to play in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. The overall game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be placed at preset locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials blocks and place them anywhere else, thus enabling various constructions. At the start of the game, the player is positioned on the surface of a procedurally produced and nearly infinite game world. The earth is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system uses a full day and night routine, with one full pattern lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players face various non-player individuals known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
