The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, learning resource gathering, crafting, and combat. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game up to now and the next best-selling video game of all right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the player to accomplish, allowing players plenty of flexibility in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there is an achievements system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to try out in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around inserting and breaking blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only be positioned at set locations on the grid. Players can gather these material blocks and place them elsewhere, enabling various constructions thus.At the start of the game, the ball player is positioned on the top of any procedurally made and nearly infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system follows a complete day and night circuit, with one full routine lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the participant; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
