Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game custom made Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and published by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to construct constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival setting where the player must acquire resources to construct the world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the capability to fly, an excitement function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can soar around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Laptop or computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and resources for the game.Minecraft received reward from critics after release, and received numerous accolades and honours. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game to date and the second best-selling video game of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the player to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of liberty in choosing how to experiment with the gameHowever, there can be an accomplishment system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to experiment with in third person function. The core gameplay revolves around positioning and breaking blocks. The overall game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move easily across the world, objects can only just be located at resolved locations on the grid. Players can collect these material blocks and place them somewhere else, enabling various constructions thus.At the start of the game, the player is positioned on the surface of the procedurally made and nearly infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a day and night circuit, with one full circuit long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player character types known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been mentioned by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the participant; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
