Minecraft is a sandbox gaming at first created by Swedish game custom Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and printed by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to make the global world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the capability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The Computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and resources for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and received numerous prizes and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game as of yet and the next best-selling video game ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of flexibility in choosing how to try out the gameHowever, there can be an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experiment with in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around positioning and breaking blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be positioned at fixed locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials place and blocks them in other places, thus allowing for various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the player is placed on the surface of a procedurally produced and virtually infinite game world. The world is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system uses a complete night and day routine, with one full circuit lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player people known as mobs, including animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been mentioned by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
