Minecraft is a sandbox video game at first created by Swedish game custom Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and released by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to develop constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where in fact the player must acquire resources to create the world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the capability to fly, an excursion function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can soar around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The Computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and possessions for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and acquired numerous accolades and honors. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, making it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed two months.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the ball player to perform, allowing players plenty of flexibility in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there can be an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to learn in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and positioning blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be located at fixed locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials place and blocks them elsewhere, thus enabling various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the player is placed on the surface of the procedurally made and almost infinite game world. The entire world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system uses a night and day pattern, with one full routine lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player character types known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been known by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
