Minecraft is a sandbox gaming formerly created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and published by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to construct constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to generate the world and keep maintaining health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to build with and the capability to fly, an trip mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator method where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received reward from critics upon release, and triumphed in numerous accolades and honors. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each month, rendering it the best-selling PC game currently and the next best-selling video game of all right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed two months.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the ball player to accomplish, allowing players plenty of freedom in choosing how to learn the gameHowever, there can be an achievements system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option that can be played in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around placing and breaking blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only be put at preset locations on the grid. Players can gather these material blocks and place them elsewhere, thus allowing for various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the gamer is located on the top of any procedurally made and virtually infinite game world. The globe is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system uses a full day and night routine, with one full routine long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players face various non-player heroes known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the participant; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
