Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game developer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and printed by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to generate constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the global world and keep maintaining health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the ability to fly, an excursion setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Personal computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics upon release, and earned numerous accolades and honors. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game at this point and the second best-selling gaming of all right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the participant to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of liberty in choosing how to try out the gameHowever, there is an accomplishment system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to try out in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and putting blocks. The overall game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only just be located at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can accumulate these materials blocks and place them anywhere else, thus enabling various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the player is positioned on the top of any procedurally produced and almost infinite game world. The planet is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system follows a night and day cycle, with one full routine prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player individuals known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
