In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the player to perform, allowing players plenty of independence in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to learn in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around placing and breaking blocks. The overall game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move openly around the world, objects can only be located at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials blocks and place them in other places, allowing for various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the gamer is located on the surface of a procedurally produced and nearly infinite game world. The entire world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system follows a full day and night circuit, with one full routine sustained 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players encounter various non-player individuals known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
