Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and publicized by Mojang later. The creative and building areas of Minecraft permit players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to make the global world and keep maintaining health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the ability to fly, an excitement mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can take a flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and resources for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and earned numerous accolades and prizes. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling gaming ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a offer to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the ball player to perform, allowing players plenty of freedom in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there is an achievements system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experiment with in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be located at permanent locations on the grid. Players can gather these material blocks and place them in other places, thus allowing for various constructions. At the start of the game, the gamer is located on the top of a procedurally generated and nearly infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system uses a full day and night routine, with one full routine prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players come across various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
