Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game custom made Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and posted by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft enable players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to make the world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to create with and the ability to fly, an experience function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator method where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Personal computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and belongings for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and triumphed in numerous honors and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling video game of all right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed two months.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to learn in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around placing and breaking blocks. The overall game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only just be put at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can get these materials place and blocks them anywhere else, thus enabling various constructions. At the start of the game, the player is located on the top of the procedurally generated and virtually infinite game world. The global world is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a day and night circuit, with one full pattern prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the overall game, players come across various non-player personas known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
