Multiple gameplay settings are available, including survival setting where the player must acquire resources to make the world and keep maintaining health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the ability to fly, an trip method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The global world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system follows a day and night pattern, with one full pattern long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player characters known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been noted by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
