Minecraft is a sandbox gaming at first created by Swedish game custom Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and printed by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to make constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to generate the global world and keep maintaining health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the capability to fly, an excursion setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The Personal computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets for the overall game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and received numerous honours and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling video game of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed two months.

The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system uses a full night and day circuit, with one full routine lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players come across various non-player characters known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
